Class 1 | Week 8 | DAT601

Today Todd is giving us talk that compared conceptual, logical and physical database designs and the differences between them, likely to properly define the differences between them before the class moves onto the next milestone of our project into the logical modeling phase. He has also advised everyone in the class to install SQL server along with SQL management studio for our further physical designs, luckily I already have this software installed and I have simply verified that it is functioning correctly by creating a database within my local server. Following this Todd his bought up the Milestone 3 brief to help explain what is required to us, his first point was that we are not locked into what we designed in the previous milestones, we can iterate upon what we did, we are to produce a report that integrates with our previous milestones into one master report. Physical database design methodology appears to have many steps involved within it, it appears to be a complex proce...

Class 2 | Week 6 | DAT601

Today we have received out project that will carry out until the end of the term, Todd has created his own scenario for us to produce database designs from, this concept carries some ambiguity with it but I get the feeling that the point of this is that most business situations can be ambiguous. After some review of the brief I have identified the overall structure of this database, there are still many wrinkles to iron out in terms of the relationships but this should prove a doable process once the core data the database needs to store is layed out in a plain format. Considering the two week break we have ahead of us I want to get the bulk of milestone one completed in order to have the flexibility of editing my work as required in the final week before it is due. Interesting concept for a project brief, should be fun.

Today's topic is the NaLeR Analysis, which is described as a complicated process by nature. This process appears to be highly focused on confirming the logic and process of your database, picking out each piece and examining its logic. After some further explanation it has become clear that this process is used to check the integrity of every single relationship by writing out the relationship in a sentence, this way it is simple to identify if your relationship does not actually make sense.

Class 1 | Week 5 | DAT601

Practice report DUE Todd begun the lesson via explaining to the class exactly what is required for the practice report hand-in. Normalization Next on Todds agenda was a lecture into normalization, this begun with a talk that attempted to get across the concept of some key words involved with normalization. Todd then showed us a video that explained upto 5th normal form, he stopped at the boyce-codd normal form area and went into more depth due to the videos bad example. The lesson was a challenge to follow with such a hard concept to explain, but through some examples it became more understandable in the end, it feels like me foot is in the door but I have no attained a full understanding of the concept yet. Todd ended the lesson early to allow groups to work on their practice projects before it is due tonight, our group is finalizing the normalization part of our document before wrapping it up and handing it in.
